The Humane Society of Guelph is working to make the process of reuniting pets and owners a much easier task.

A microchip clinic was held on Saturday, with over 70 dogs and cats undergoing the process.

“The chips work with radio frequency and are smaller than a grain of rice,” said Kathryn Leonard, director of community programs and outreach with the company. “They go right into your pet just between their shoulder blades. What’s great is that collars can come off, harnesses can come loose, but chips will always stay there and they record all your personal information.

“It’s the only permanent form of loss prevention for your pets.”

Leonard adds that chipped animals return to their owners immediately and usually only spend an hour at the humane society.

“I would say more often than not, when stray pets come into a shelter, they’re not wearing collars,” Leonard said. “They slipped out of their harnesses. You really need to have that chip to make it easy to reunite.”

Ken and Andrea Sprite brought their dogs Bear and Bailey to make sure they could quickly find their pets if they wandered off.

“During the years we were growing up, this type of technology wasn’t available,” Ken said. “We’ve had community signs where a dog or a cat has been lost, and sometimes they don’t come home.

“For that to be available to us in this day and age is fantastic.”

The next Guelph Humane Society microchip clinic will be held in early September.
