Journalist organizations rejected PEMRA’s ban notice on reporting in court Achi-News

Islamabad (Web Desk) Regarding court reporting, journalistic organizations have rejected the notice of ban on court reporting by PEMRA.

According to private television, a meeting of journalist organizations Press Association of Supreme Court and Islamabad High Court Journalist Association was held where the ban imposed by PEMRA on court reports was reviewed.

Journalist organizations rejected PEMRA’s notice banning reporting in court, saying PEMRA called the notice against press freedom and independent judiciary.

The statement added that the Constitution of Pakistan provides the right to freedom of expression and access to information and PEMRA does not have the power to prohibit reporting of court proceedings.

In this regard, the PEMRA notification was said to be in clear violation of Article 19 and 19-A of the Constitution and demanded that the notification banning judicial reporting be withdrawn.

Journalist organizations said that if Pemra did not withdraw the notice, it would be challenged in court.

Yesterday, the Electronic Media Regulatory Authority of Pakistan had banned the running of news or tickers related to pending court cases.

The PEMRA statement said that all news, current affairs and regional language television channels should refrain from running tickers and news regarding pending court cases and also not to report news about written court orders.

In this regard, it was further stated that no material should be broadcast based on any type of comments, opinions or suggestions and recommendations regarding the possible outcome of the cases being heard in court, tribunal.

However, the statement said that TV channels can report such cases, the hearing of which is telecasted live.
