The youngest of the second generation of the family – Chandrakant Dadu Malli (36) – brought glory not only to the family but also to the country by winning a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow in 2014. An incentive for joint families to save resources: Malis
The family needs four kilograms of rice and a similar amount of jowar or wheat. The family has one television set, a refrigerator, a stove, four cholas. Everyone watches evening programs on TV together. The afternoon is reserved for the children to watch cartoons or movies of their choice.
Deepak Mali (39), Daulat Mali’s son, said: “People curiously ask us the secret recipe of our life together. We tell them that it is one thought and harmony between each other. We get rice, groundnuts, vegetables from our farm and milk from the cows and the buffalo ours, which means we only have to rely on a few things for the market.”
Senior family officials said the government should promote joint families for the overall health of the society as there would be less property disputes.
“The government should incentivize the people to live together, as wasting critical resources like electricity and water is saved. The government should also ask the banks to provide educational loans to young people from the joint family with collateral of each family member who can be eligible according to the bank’s norms,” said Deepak Mali.
