122 glaciers have been identified in the Pir Panjal Range, which have significantly decreased in size since the 1980s. The glaciers spread over an area of about 25.7 square kilometers have shrunk to only 15.9 square kilometers.

Researchers from the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar revealed this in a study. The research led by researchers Mohammad Ashraf Ghanai and Syed Qaser Bukhari was published in the International Journal of Hydrology Science and Technology.

Changes in the Pir Panjal Range of the Kashmir Basin

In this framework, researchers analyzed data related to glaciers of about four decades between 1980 and 2020. In doing so, researchers shed light on the changes taking place in the glaciers located in the Pir Panjal Range of the Kashmir Basin in India.

The glaciers in the south are melting more than those in the north.

According to the study, south-facing glaciers faced a greater decline than north-facing glaciers. Besides that, the glaciers that are at an average height of 3,800-4,000 meters above sea level, have melted much more than the glaciers at lower altitudes.

Water crisis and danger of exploding glacial lakes

Researchers say that due to the decrease in glaciers there is a danger of a water crisis. Not only that, due to the rapid and dramatic manner in which these glaciers melt, many unwanted crises may arise. This includes everything from agricultural production to everyday life. At the same time, due to the melting of the glaciers, the risk of a sudden eruption of glacial lakes increases, which could pose a threat to the ecosystem.
