It can often feel like a huge chore to clean your house – especially when you’ve run out of cleaning supplies.

To make your spring cleaning chores easier and more budget-friendly, Nancy Emery, a cleaning expert at Tap Warehouse, has rounded up five items in your closet and refrigerator that can be used to target spills, stains, and dirt.

From tea bags to lemon juice, these items you already have in your cupboards can help make your home look spotless again.

Cleaning your home doesn’t have to involve buying multiple cleaning products and using harsh chemicals on your surfaces. Instead, you can clean your home with items you have in your closet and refrigerator.

Here, Nancy Emery has revealed cabinet staples that can be used to target problem areas in your kitchen.

Coffee on your counter

If you are a heavy coffee drinker, you might want to think about reducing your consumption from four to two cups a day.

This is because you can use instant coffee grounds to remove tough stains on your surfaces.

Nancy says: “Simply sprinkle a teaspoon of dissolved coffee grounds into half a cup of warm, soapy water and use this solution to get rid of the stain.

“Coffee works to help cut through dirt due to the acidity, making it the perfect everyday item to help keep your homes spotless.”

Tea bags on ovenware

For all the tea drinkers out there, it’s not just coffee that you can use to remove stubborn stains, but tea bags are also a great natural product to use as part of your spring cleaning routine.

Nancy says: “To get rid of burnt spots and grime on cookware and other non-electrical appliances, soak them in the sink overnight with a few tea bags and this should help bring back their once gorgeous shine.”

Instead of breaking your nails and scrubbing the dishes and containers carefully, the tannins in the tea bags help to naturally remove grease and loosen food dirt.

Lemon on the taps and the kettle

Many of us would have heard about the benefits of using lemons when it comes to cleaning, but here are some tips for removing scale from faucets and getting rid of stains.

Did you know that lemons can also be used to remove scale from your kettle?

Nancy says: “To get rid of scale on your taps, you’ll need to come up with a 75/25 solution of lemon juice and water.

“All you have to do is use a soft sponge and gently rub the solution, and leave it on the tap to dissolve the scale deposits for 30 minutes. After the time is up, rinse thoroughly with water.

“For special finishes such as brushed brass, matte black or chrome, it is especially important to avoid using harsh chemicals such as vinegar when cleaning.

“Lemon is quite acidic, so be sure not to let the lemon juice solution sit for more than two minutes.

“When you’ve flushed with water, dry the faucets with a microfiber cloth as this will help prevent scale.

“You should also clean the fan regularly, which is where you’re likely to see most of the scale build up.

“Use your toothbrush and lemon juice solution to scrub gently.

“Did you know you can also use lemons to descale your kettle?

“Start by cutting a lemon in half and putting them in a kettle with half to three quarters of water. After it boils, let it sit for 10 minutes and then boil again.”

Mayonnaise on wooden furniture

A much lesser known cleaning aid that can be found in your fridge is mayonnaise.

Not only does it work great in a sandwich, but it also works wonders for removing ring marks on wooden tables that are left covered and glassed.

Nancy advises: “Squeeze a pea-sized amount of the spice onto a piece of kitchen roll and place it on the stain.

“Apply a small amount of pressure before leaving it on the stain for 20 minutes. Once you’ve done this, brush the area with a clean cloth.”

Ketchup on copper

Not only mayonnaise is an excellent ingredient for cleaning the refrigerator, but also ketchup. Use it to restore and maintain your stylish copper cookware.

Nancy adds: “Apply ketchup to a clean cloth and using a circular motion, scrub the stained areas of your pots and pans.”

Although this is a very effective method, you may want to make your rooms smell like something other than ketchup.

For Nancy, citrus is the most beneficial smell in your kitchen.

She adds: “Citrus is one of the best scents to use in the kitchen because it has uplifting properties, but it also smells strong enough to help mask unwanted cooking smells.”
