Norway’s Oslo (International Desk) has announced on April 18 that it will end the requirement for financial assistance to obtain a permanent residence permit, after which people are allowed to live and settle there easily.

The Norwegian government has waived the previously mandated financial independence conditions for applicants within the last 12 months.

Under previous regulations, individuals between the ages of 18 and 67 were required to show stable income during the previous year and avoid receiving financial assistance from the government in order to obtain a permanent resident permit.

However, a recent amendment removed the prohibition on receiving financial support under the Social Services Act, while maintaining the condition of maintaining a fixed income.

A permanent residence permit gives people the right to live and work in Norway for an indefinite period.

Applicants must have a valid residence permit in Norway for at least three years and meet additional eligibility criteria.

Once the application is approved, recipients will receive a resident card which will be proof of their permanent resident status and will be valid for two years. Previously, permanent residence permits were validated through stickers affixed to passports.

The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) is currently reviewing the guidelines on language training requirements for people who obtain residence permits after 1 January 2021.

Approved sources of income to meet the financial criteria include employment, business income, pension payments, sickness benefits, loans, education grants, and introductory benefits.

Financial support in the form of small expenses or money for essential needs such as medical costs and educational materials is available to people who experience financial difficulties during their stay in Norway.
