The 76-year-old man had been a prisoner in Edinburgh Prison when he was taken to hospital on 9 September 2022 following a fall in his cell the night before.

Tobin was on sentence for the murders of Angelika Kluk, 23, Vicky Hamilton, 15, and Dinah McNicol, 18.

The killer has long been suspected by the police of murdering a number of other women as he lives under more than 40 aliases and has over 150 cars in his life.

His ashes were scattered at sea.

In a brief virtual hearing before Sheriff McCarron on Monday, all parties confirmed they were ready to move forward and a date of September 17 2024 was set for the fatal accident investigation into Tobin’s death.

Tobin had been receiving palliative care before his death as his health deteriorated.

He was monitored by GeoAmey officials at all times while at ERI.

The investigation, which is mandatory by law, will look into the cause of the death, the circumstances in which it occurred and establish whether any reasonable precautions could have been taken to prevent the death.

Its aim is to reduce the risk of future deaths.

FAI is used to establish facts rather than assign blame to an individual or group.

Procurator fiscal Andy Shanks, who leads death investigations for the Scottish Prosecution Service, said: “The Lord Advocate is of the opinion that Peter Tobin’s death occurred while in custody and therefore a fatal accident investigation is in order mandatory.”
