India’s number 1 tennis player Sumit Nagal has become the first Indian player to reach the main draw of the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters after 42 years. Before him, in 1982, Ramesh Krishnan had made his place in the main draw of the singles.

On Sunday, Sumit sealed his place in the tournament by defeating 55th-ranked Facundo Diaz Acosta of Argentina 7-5 2-6 6-2 in the last qualifying round. Earlier on Saturday, he had defeated Italy’s 63rd ranked Flavio Coboli in the first qualifying round.

Sumit won after trailing in the first set
Sumit won the first set against Acosta after coming back from 2-5 down in the first set. After that he had to face defeat in the second set. Nagal then came back and won the match by winning the third set.

Nagal had lost in the quarter-finals in Marrakesh
Nagal had to face defeat in the men’s quarter-finals at the Marrakech Open final on Wednesday. The Indian player was defeated by Lorenzo Sonego of Italy 6-1, 3-6, 4-6. Nagal had made a strong start in this match and although he took the lead, he could not maintain his performance until the end, and had to face defeat because of that.

What are Monte Carlo Masters?
The Monte-Carlo Masters is a tennis tournament for men’s professional players, held in Roquebrun-Cap-Martin, France. It is played on clay courts at Monte Carlo Country Club and takes place in April. It is organized every year. The tournament is part of nine ATP Masters 1000 events on the ATP Tour.

Sumit Nagal’s performance this year has been better. He started the year with victory at the Australian Open, his first Grand Slam, defeating Alexander Bublik. After this, he won the Chennai Open and broke into the top 100 in the ATP rankings. Earlier this week, Nagal had reached his career-best ranking of 95.
