India will highlight its universal coverage through Ayushman Bharat, public health on emergency preparedness and digital health transformation in the country at the World Health Assembly (WHA) to be held in Geneva on May 27. The annual event organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) will also feature an indigenous portal equipped with innovative tools designed to improve disaster response and medical assistance. Official sources gave this information on Wednesday.

The 77th session of the WHA will be held in Geneva from May 27 to June 1. The delegation from India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will be led by Union Health Secretary Apura Chandra. Representatives from 194 countries will participate in the event organized to frame the global health system. This year’s WH theme is ‘All for Health, Health for All’.

Sources said the WHA consists of seats of three major committees – Plenary, Committee I and Committee II. The Health Assembly will be inaugurated for the session and will be attended by health ministers and heads of delegations from 194 countries. An official source said that India will chair this committee and it will discuss issues like universal health coverage, public health for emergency preparedness and response, climate change, sustainable funding of WHO etc.

Committee B mainly focuses on internal and external audit, budget and financing and the secretariat of the World Health Organization. At least 14 side events and a number of round table discussions will take place on the sidelines of the health summit, sharing opinions on various health issues. India leads and supports one regional voice for the Southeast Asian region and advocates for welfare and health promotion, social standards of health, maternal nutrition, children and young children and health for all.
