India will today deliver the first set of BrahMos supersonic missiles to the Philippines. A deal worth $375 million has been signed between the two countries for this weapon system in 2022. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is sending its C-17 Globemaster cargo plane with missiles to the Philippines. The missiles will be delivered to the Philippine Marine Corps.
Sources said that the weapon systems were also transported by sea, where cargo ships were chartered. According to him, the export of the ground systems for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system together with the missiles started only last month.
The Philippines is getting this missile system at a time when its tensions with China are rising due to ongoing skirmishes in the South China Sea. The Philippines will deploy three batteries of the BrahMos missile system in its coastal areas to defend against any threat in the region.
The deal was approved after several approvals from partner countries for the missile program. The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, a joint venture between the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and NPO Mashinostroyeniya of the Russian Federation, is considered one of the most successful missile programs in the world. BrahMos has played an important role in enhancing India’s defense capabilities.
