More than 2.8 lakh Maldivians will vote today in the Parliament of the Maldives, known as the Majlis.

Maldivian President Mohamed Muaizu was elected president only last year and the parliamentary elections currently taking place will have no effect on President Mohamed Muaizu and he will remain in office. However, if Mohammed Moizu’s party cannot get a majority, then Moizu will have to face a lot of trouble to implement his policies in the country. Mohammed Muizhu is in the headlines for his anti-India stance. In such a situation, India would like President Muizzu’s party not to get a majority so that China does not get a chance to establish a foothold there.
Maldives is important to India
The Maldives located in the Indian Ocean is very important strategically. The relations between India and the Maldives were also close, but after the rise to power of Mohammed Moise, the relations between the two countries slipped. The President of the Maldives has begun to bring back the Indian troops deployed there, which will affect India’s surveillance capability in the Indian Ocean region. This is why India will want President Moizo’s party not to get a majority in the parliamentary elections, so that it will have to work under opposition pressure.
The current opposition party of the Maldives, the Maldivian Democratic Party, is considered to be supported by India and this party still has the majority in the Maldivian Parliament. India hopes that the Maldivian Democratic Party will once again get a majority in the parliamentary elections in the Maldives.
