India’s Ministry of External Affairs has reacted strongly saying that countries that respect the rule of law should not allow terror in the name of freedom of expression. Celebrating and glorifying violence should not be part of any civilized society. The ministry said in a statement that democratic countries that respect the rule of law should not allow fundamental elements to be threatened in the name of freedom of expression.

Ottawa (the capital of Canada) is hesitating to accept people into the country. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has claimed that the criminal records of Indians entering Canada on student visas will be checked.

Speaking on Saturday, Jaishankar said, “We have repeatedly convinced Canada not to give visas, legitimacy or political space to people who cause problems in the relationship between the two countries. But the Canadian government has paid no price to our request. India has sought the extradition of 25 people, most of them pro-Khalistan. But Jaishankar claimed that Canada paid no attention to this.

Commenting on Jaishankar’s comments on Monday, Immigration Minister Mark Miller said, “We are not weak.” Let the Indian Foreign Minister say what he says. But his statement is not correct, he said. Yes, we do conduct criminal background checks for those coming to our country on student visas. We take this very seriously. He explained that if he has a criminal record, he will not hide it inside the country.

Why the conflict between India and Canada?

He declined to confirm whether the three Indians arrested for killing Nijjar were in Canada on student visas. He said that the information cannot be shared at this time as the police investigation is ongoing. In September last year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had alleged that Indian agents were involved in the killing of 45-year-old Nijjar, a Khalistan separatist. After this, relations between India and Canada deteriorated.
