Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Thursday that Saudi Arabia had no role to play in cracking down on his government. Khan’s government was removed from power in 2022.

Imran’s government was removed from power in April 2022. Immediately after that he accused America of conspiring to topple his government. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leader Sher Afzal Marwat recently said during a television interview that Saudi Arabia, along with America, played a role in removing Imran Khan from office. PTI came under pressure after this statement. Now the founder of the party has clarified by giving a statement.

This statement from Marwat came at a time when the Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, along with his delegation went on a high-level visit to explore investment possibilities in Pakistan. However, PTI distanced itself from Marwat’s statement. After this Imran gave this statement for damage control.

He informed PTI leaders about his statement after a meeting at Adiala Jail Rawalpindi. According to PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) chief Sahabzada Hamid Raza, Imran said during the meeting that Saudi Arabia was not involved in breaching his government. Earlier, PTI had said that Marwat’s statement was in no way in line with the party’s strategy or stand.

Imran Khan had an uneasy relationship with Saudi Arabia. In 2019, he participated in a meeting of Muslim leaders in Malaysia. Saudi Arabia had expressed displeasure about this.
