A hearing was held in the High Court on the suo motu case regarding cultivation of opium in Khunti and continued increase in the trade of drugs like opium, hashish, ganja etc. in the state. The court said that strict orders should be passed against the policemen who failed to stop the drug trade in Jharkhand.

.

Passing the order, a division bench headed by Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad said that if police officers continue to be careless in buying and selling drugs in the state, strict action would be taken against them. If drug trade is not stopped in any area and no action is taken against the policemen of the concerned police station area, then the court can pass strict orders against the SP/SSP of that area.

In the case, an affidavit was filed by the Director General CID stating that a meeting was held between the state government and the Narcotics Control Bureau. In this regard, SOP has been made to prevent drug trade. However, the division bench expressed displeasure over the SOP, saying it did not mention what action would be taken against the accused police. Nothing has been clearly said about determining the liability of police officers who fail to stop the drug trade.
