The fate of the capital and its geographical location for Andhra Pradesh remains in limbo even 10 years after its bifurcation. The reason is that Hyderabad will no longer be the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from June 2. Apart from this, matters like distribution of public property worth Rs 1.4 lakh crore are also pending. Andhra Pradesh’s ruling YSRCP and the main opposition TDP are still resolute in their claims.

The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act came into effect on 1 March 2014. It stipulated that Hyderabad would be the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for a period not exceeding 10 years. Under this law, Hyderabad will be the capital of Telangana only from June 2, 2024. When YSRCP chief and current Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy came to power in 2019 by ousting N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP, he brought a proposal to create three capital cities. In this way he shattered the dream of his predecessor to make Amaravati the capital.

Reddy suggested creating three titles

Reddy advocated decentralization and welfare-centred governance and suggested making Amaravati the legislative capital, Cornwall the judicial capital and Visakhapatnam the executive capital. Ahead of the simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections held on May 13, Reddy promised the people of the state to make Visakhapatnam the capital. But due to legal obstacles, there are doubts about the fulfillment of his promises. Cases related to the proposal for three capital cities are pending in the Supreme Court.
