The troubles of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who is in jail, show no signs of abating. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday alleged that Soren had taken the help of a revenue officer, Bano Pratap Prasad, for alleged activities related to illegal possession, purchase and proceeds of crime.

According to the agency, Prasad assisted several individuals in efforts related to the illegal seizure, acquisition and dispossession of assets acquired through criminal means and abused his authority.

The ED’s statement came after its Ranchi unit filed a prosecution complaint against Soren and four others in a land scam case. He is being investigated under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002 for purchase, possession and concealment of land measuring 8.8 acres in Bariato, Ranchi.

The ED said its investigation into the land scam cases revealed the role of one of the accused, Bhanu Pratap Prasad. The agency said that it has come to know that there was a menace of land mafia operating in Jharkhand, which used to forge land records in Ranchi. It was also revealed that land ownership documents were also forged in favor of the land mafia.

The notice also said that such plots were subsequently sold to other people on the basis of forged land documents. He said the original land title records were tampered with or concealed, leading to illegal acquisition, occupation and use of such properties. Four others named Bhanu Pratap Prasad, Binod Singh, Hilarius Kachhap and Raj Kumar Pahan have also been booked as accused in the ED charge sheet for their role in helping Hemant Soran in illegal acquisition and possession of property.
