Guwahati: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has approached the Supreme Court with a fresh petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), citing significant delays in the Jharkhand High Court verdict in his initial petition. Despite the arguments ending on February 28, the Supreme Court has yet to issue its verdict, leaving Soren in custody since January 31.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who represents Soran, brought the matter before Judge Sanjeev Khanna on Wednesday, requesting an urgent registration of the new petition. Sibal emphasized that the delay in the High Court’s ruling left Soran on trial "Deadlock," with no clear way to pursue his legal remedy. He expressed concern that the delay could leave Soren in detention until after the elections.

"Now we went to the (supreme) court again and said that I cannot move forward or backward, at least please give the verdict. The judge said nothing. The man will be inside and the election will be over. where are we going" Siebel said during the hearing.

Justice Khanna advised Sibal to submit a request by email to the Chief Justice’s Secretariat for urgent registration. Sibal indicated that such a request had already been made. Justice Khanna noted that the decision on registration rests with Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, and he could not commit to a specific date for the hearing. .

When Siebel asked if the case could be registered on Friday, Judge Khanna responded, "No, I’m not saying anything. The CJ secretariat will provide the dates."

The fresh petition comes as Soran’s earlier appeal against the ED’s arrest was dismissed by the Supreme Court, with the court directing him to approach the Jharkhand High Court for relief.
