Forty nidoviruses have been discovered in a variety of vertebrates, from fish to rodents. These also include 13 corona viruses. These are floating in our environment and can lead to a major epidemic like the SARS-CoV-2 corona virus.
Using a new computer method, the team of researchers discovered this by analyzing about three lakh data related to the virus. This computer process can help stop the spread of new viruses. It enables the systematic discovery of virus forms that are dangerous to humans. Her results were published in PLoS Pathogens. According to the researchers, these are not actually new, but genetically modified. The researchers combined genetic data from vertebrates collected in scientific databases with new questions using their computers. They looked for animals infected with the virus to obtain and study infectious genetic material on a large scale. His focus was nidovirus, which includes the corona family. Nidoviruses, whose genetic material consists of RNA (ribose nucleic acid), are abundant in vertebrates.
…and then a new virus was born
The researchers say that the nidoviruses they discovered in fish often exchange genetic material between different virus species. They do this outside the family as well. When distant relatives combine, it creates a virus with entirely new properties. This happens because when animals are simultaneously infected with different viruses, the infectious genes change again as the virus replicates. Such evolutionary leaps increase the aggressiveness of viruses and the danger they pose.
