PepsiCo has begun testing a blend of sunflower and pumaolin instead of palm oil and pumaulin in Lay’s chips sold in India. The company took this decision after criticism over the use of cheap ingredients considered unhealthy in packaged food in India. PepsiCo currently uses a mixture of palm oil and pumaolin in chips sold under the Lay’s brand name in India.

Following the criticism, a PepsiCo India spokesperson said, “We started the experiment a year ago to use a mixture of sunflower and pumaolin instead of palm oil and pumaulin in Lay’s chips.” In the near future only chips cooked in a mixture of sunflower and pumaulin will be used in India. However, we are working to reduce the salt content of our snacks in India to less than 1.3 mg sodium per calorie.

Use of sunflower and canola oil in America…

According to the report, the large snack and beverage manufacturer PepsiCo uses sunflower, corn and canola oil for its Lay’s chips in the US. The company claims on its American website that our chips are cooked in oils that are good for the heart.
