Halifax Harbor Bridges (HHB) is phasing out the hard shell MACPASS transponders for both passenger and commercial traffic in favor of the “easy to install” stickers.

A news release from HHB says it aims to complete the conversion by December 31.

The bridge commission introduced the current MACPASS transponder system more than 25 years ago.

“When we first introduced MACPASS transponders, flip phones were hot technology, and MP3 players were on the rise,” HHB CEO Tony Wright said in the news release.

“It goes without saying that technology has advanced significantly in all areas, including tolling, and our users deserve the best options available.”

The sticker transponders were first provided to all new customers three years ago.

The commission says they have provided a better experience with fewer reading errors at the tollgates. It also says they are compatible with the e-toll options that HHB is pursuing.

The commission says deactivated hard shell transponders can be recycled by handing them over to any bridge attendant, taking them to a MACPASS Service Center or dropping them off in special bins at the Access Nova Scotia offices in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

More information about MACPASS can be found online.
