According to sources, the federal government has taken a significant step by extending relief on five essential commodities in utility stores. This decision comes after the end of the Ramadan relief package, which is a sign of continued support for consumers.
Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) beneficiaries are expected to get a substantial monthly subsidy equivalent to Rs. 3 billion on essential items including sugar, flour, ghee, pulses, and rice. The aim of these subsidies is to ease the financial strain on vulnerable populations and ensure these key products are available at affordable prices.
Under this arrangement, sugar will be priced at Rs. 109 per kilogram in utility stores, making it more accessible to a wider segment of the population. In addition, flour will be retailed at Rs. 648 per 10 kilograms, further contributing to lightening the burden of household expenses.
The subsidy extension also includes ghee, which will now be available at Rs. 393 per kilogram. Moreover, there is a discount of Rs. 25 per kilogram will be given to pulses and rice, making these staples more affordable for consumers.
This relief package is due to continue until June 2024, providing a continuous period of assistance to those in need. By extending these subsidies, the government aims to ensure food security, mitigate inflationary pressures, and improve the general welfare of citizens.
The decision reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the public, particularly in managing essential expenses. It underlines a proactive approach to social welfare and economic stability, showing responsiveness to the needs of the population.
