A 10,000 year old treasure has been discovered in south west China. Some archaeologists were excavating the ruins of Sanxingdui. After a while, they heard a pounding sound from inside the ground. Digging revealed a special treasure.

Around 7,400 items were found

According to a report published in the journal, around 7,400 objects were discovered during the excavation, including thousands of gold ornaments, figurines and vessels and some gold masks in one pit measuring 205 square feet. Archaeologists say that all these treasures are more than 10,000 years old. Looking at them, it was found that the treasures were buried underground during the last days of the Shang Dynasty, the first Chinese imperial dynasty that arose during the Bronze Age.

A place that was the center of the Shu Empire 4,500 years ago

The area was first discovered in the 1920s and is believed to have been the center of the Shu Empire around 4,500 years ago. No documents have been revealed to explain the reign of his burial and it is not known why the treasure was buried.

Masks previously found

Excavations were carried out in the surrounding area in 2020 and 2022, when scientists from Shanghai University discovered more than 2,700 artefacts. Among the treasures found, there are several gold masks, four of which are 8 inches wide and thick. Although some masks look different from these, they are all made of gold.

Antiquities were mentioned in the gold leaf. After that, archaeologists tried to identify them. About 420 items were revealed at that time. Some objects look like fish, others resemble feathers or birds. A long gold belt was also uncovered along with a number of damaged artefacts, including a figure of a divine animal resembling a dog. Around 400 pieces of ivory were found, with the longest tusk measuring 1.4 meters and half of the tusk around 50 centimeters long.
