The company said passengers could travel on alternative routes including the Balloch to Airdrie line and the Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh via Falkirk High service.

Meanwhile, ScotRail said Hallesburg to Edinburgh services would run between Hallesburg to Airdrie and Bathgate to Edinburgh in both directions.

However, there will be no train services running between Airdrie and Bathgate – instead a replacement bus will operate this part of the journey.

Train crews are on site trying to resolve the issue, however, Network Rail said disruption could be expected until the end of the day.

A ScotRail spokesman said: “Due to a report of a sinkhole between Caldercroix and Drogluch, both lines are closed.

“The team is on site and we will share more information as soon as we have it.

“Customers can travel by alternative routes.”

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Network Rail added: “We are responding to reports of a sinkhole between Caldercroix and Drogluch.

“We had to close both lines to be safe while an in-depth investigation takes place.

“Here’s a pic of the sinkhole, not the best quality though so we’ll try to get some better ones for you.

“It’s around a meter deep.

“It is likely that the disruption will continue until the end of the day.”
