The Gehati High Court dismissed the petition of a sitting Assam MP challenging an order of the State Level Scrutiny Commission (SLSC). Member of Parliament Naba Sarnia has twice petitioned the court against the SLSC’s January 12, 2024 “speech order” revoking his Scheduled Tribe (P) status. Assam Solicitor General Devjit Saikia said a single bench of Justice SK Medhi pronounced the order.
There is no illegality in the order speaking process
Saikia said the court rejected his plea and did not give him any relief. Dismissing the petition, the court said in the order that there was no illegality in the process of speaking in the order. The order barred Sarnia from contesting elections from any constituency reserved for ST or other categories.
Sarnia’s claim – belongs to Boro Kachari community
Let us tell you, Sarnia came to Parliament from Kokrajhar (ST) constituency as an independent candidate in 2014. He announced that he will contest the Lok Sabha elections for the third time from there. Sarnia says he belongs to the Boro Kachari community and is a Lok Sabha member from the constituency reserved for that community. The state’s tribal affairs department (P) later passed an order on January 20 canceling Sarnia’s caste certificate.
