Calgarians have to wait a little longer for a glimpse but the design renderings for the city’s events center should be released this summer.
“Things are progressing as planned,” Ward 1 Cllr. Sonya Sharp told reporters outside council chambers Monday after a closed-door meeting with members of the event center committee.
“The momentum of this timeline has been at an all-time high and we are exactly where we need to be on this project.”
Sharp, who chairs the events center committee, said the city hopes to submit a development permit for the $1.2 billion project in July and the design could be unveiled soon after that.
Sharp said she hopes to break ground on the project in August.
Although the details of the design cannot be published yet, Ward 10 Cllr. Andre Chabot said he hopes the project stays on time and on budget.
“Hopefully everyone will be happy with the new proposal. It is moving forward effectively and efficiently,” Chabot told reporters outside the council chambers on Monday.

Sharp said she likes the new concept designs more than the previous designs released in 2021.
“This is not an apples-to-apples comparison,” Sharp said of the new design.
“I’m looking forward to hearing what Calgarians think. My personal opinion is that I like this more.”
The entire project is expected to cost $1.2 billion, which includes the arena, community ice rink, and public space improvements around the event center in the River District, as well as general improvements to area transportation and infrastructure.
According to the details in the final signed agreements, the project is due to be completed on August 31, 2026. If on time, the Flames could play the 2026-27 season in the new arena.
