GUWAHATI: “Finding Maini” is a new genre Assamese film directed by Bijon Bikash Brahma and produced by Kushal Kumar Brahma. The film is less than 90 minutes, and covers events in Guwahati of just over half a day.

Maini, played by Drati Bhardwaj, unintentionally leaves her house with a bag, containing “things”, on her way to the airport. Her brother, written by Dipankar Kalita, and his sidekicks want to prevent her from being caught with the “stuff” by airport security.

Unfortunately for him and his team, his sister becomes unreachable due to cell network problems. So they go to her school, then to a bar looking for her.

Unexpected funny incidents occur in the process, before they decide to proceed to the airport, first on a two-wheeler and then by car.

In between they also enjoy drinks and smoke. The film was shot in the roads, lanes and bylanes of Guwahati, and those who are aware of the city will be well versed in whatever the frames capture.

The filmmakers tried to make a comedy film in a normal Hollywood genre. The film is aimed at the youth and youth of today, as is evident from the final product.

The director is to be commended for not making it too loud, and keeping it as subtle as possible. Perhaps, this is the first time that such an attempt has been made in Assamese films.

However, it has gaps, apart from being a fresh Assamese film. The direction could have been better. It was also possible to notice shortcomings in the editing.

Otherwise, it could have been a more compact product. Harjit Diaz’s music is suitable for such a film.

Though commendable, the cinematography could have been better, especially the two-wheeler rides in the lanes and bylanes of Guwahati. Writer Kishalai Malla has done a commendable job.
