Flames could be seen shooting close to the M80 at Cumbernauld near the junction with the M73, about 16 miles outside Glasgow.
A huge plume of black smoke was visible to drivers and passengers on the road for some distance.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it received a call at 6.15pm of a lorry on fire on Deerdykes Road in the town.
Two fire extinguishers were on the scene treating the fire.
It is not yet known if anyone was reported to be in the vehicle or if another vehicle was involved.
