An Alberta distillery scooped a prestigious honor for its whiskey in an international spirits competition.

The Eau Claire Distillery received a platinum medal for its Rupert Outstanding Whiskey at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) this week, according to a news release Tuesday.

This is the first Canadian distillery to win the award in the competition.

“Being recognized as the first Canadian distillery to achieve platinum status is an incredible honor and a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence,” said David Farran, founder and president of Eau Claire Distillery.

“Most distilleries strive for years to reach this level of recognition, and we are proud to have reached this milestone on our 10th anniversary.”

The whiskey received the honor after winning its third double gold medal in a row.

According to The Tasting Alliance, which runs the annual competition, a spirit receives a double gold medal rating after receiving a gold medal rating from each member of the judging panel.

“These are among the best products in the world,” the league says on its website.

The gold medals are awarded to “exceptional spirits who are almost at the pinnacle of achievement.”

Eau Claire released Rupert’s Exceptional Whiskey in 2020. The distillery is located in the Turner Valley, approximately 65 kilometers south of Calgary.

The SFWSC is regarded as the most respected and influential spirits competition in the world.

SFWSC 2024 was held between April 5 and 7.
