Drone used to smuggle $250,000 worth of goods into NB jail, police say Achi-News

Two Montreal men are facing charges after police say a drone was used to smuggle drugs and other paraphernalia into a New Brunswick prison.

In a press release, the Miramichi Integrated Enforcement Unit — made up of members from the municipal police, RCMP and the Department of Justice — said the Atlantic agency began an investigation into the trafficking of controlled and controlled substances in February.

He said that drugs and other prohibited items were trafficked into the facility with a drone.

Items include fentanyl, cocaine, explosives, hashish, hashish, tobacco, cell phones, SIM cards, cell phone chargers, lighters and rolling papers. The drone and the cattle were also seized.

The estimated value in custody of the items is around $250,000.

According to the Miramichi IEU, the two suspects – ages 25 and 29 – were arrested in Miramichi on May 3 with the assistance of the Bathurst IEU and RCMP.

Miramichi IEU spokesman Brad Gallant said the two will appear in court in November.

He added that the use of drones to transport goods to prisons is becoming more common.

“Institutions across Canada have had issues with drone crashes,” Gallant said.
