DRDO tests a supersonic missile in Odisha Achi-News

GUWAHATI: The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully tested a supersonic missile system on Wednesday, May 1.

DRDO announced this in a statement today and said, "A Supersonic Torpedo System (SMART) missile launch was successfully tested at around 0830 on 01 May 2024 from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off Odisha coast.

SMART is the next generation missile-based lightweight torpedo delivery system, designed and developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to enhance the anti-submarine warfare capability of the Indian Navy well beyond the conventional range of lightweight torpedoes."

According to reports, the missile system boasts several advanced subsystems, including a two-stage solid propulsion system, an electromechanical actuator system, a precision inertial navigation system, etc.

Moreover, the system carries an advanced lightweight torpedo as a payload along with a parachute-based release system, and is expected to enhance the strength of the Indian Navy, the DRDO said.
