Too much belly fat can increase your risk of certain chronic conditions. Drinking less alcohol, eating more protein and lifting weights are just a few steps you can take to lose fat – but Moseley has other ways too.

He is known for his expert nutrition advice and often shares his neat tips.

The latest advice, shared with The Express, applies particularly to over-50s, as weight can become even harder to lose in midlife.

According to Mosley, shedding fat can be done by “cutting out” sugars and carbs, but you also have to understand how weight gain works if you want long-lasting results.

He said: “You have to understand the basics of how insulin works. Your body produces insulin after a meal to keep your blood sugar stable.

“On your cell walls, insulin opens the glucose gates to let sugar through—to be burned in muscle and stored as fat. In your fat, insulin also curbs the release of fatty acids into your system.”

“That’s all well and good – as long as your insulin works. However, as we age, the insulin receptors on the cell wall become less sensitive.

“As a result, even after a meal, our blood is full of glucose and fatty acids. It’s a toxic brew, which causes a variety of bad outcomes, including rapidly expanding belly fat.”

Because of this, stomach fat can affect older people more than younger people. It can also affect women going through menopause as changing hormones can lead to a slower metabolism.

Therefore it is beneficial for both women and men over 50 to change their diet.

“Eliminating sugar spikes is the key”

Mosley recommended limiting, or avoiding, two types of food: sugars and carbohydrates. He said: “To make a serious impact on your belly fat, cutting the sugar spikes is key.

“A surprising number of ‘diet’ snacks and drinks are high in sugar, marketed as diet foods because they happen to be low in fat.” Therefore, Mosley recommended eating less sweet fruits such as mangoes, pineapples, sugary smoothies and juices.

As for carbohydrates, he emphasized that “when people cut carbohydrates, their appetite decreases and they lose weight.”

Lean people should “replace processed carbohydrates such as white bread, chips and pasta with slow-release energy sources, such as brown rice or quinoa.”

He added: “Two things will surprise you: the amount of sugar you used to consume and the speed at which your belly fat will start to tame itself.”
