A recent report by the Telegraph (UK) has revealed an admission by British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca regarding rare side effects associated with its COVID-19 vaccine, Covishield. According to court documents, the vaccine can, in rare cases, lead to a condition that causes blood clots and low platelet counts .

Covishield, the product of a collaboration between AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, was created by the Serum Institute of India and is widely administered in the country. However, concerns have been raised about its safety profile, prompting legal proceedings against AstraZeneca in the UK.

A class-action lawsuit filed in the UK High Court by victims in 51 cases alleges the vaccine caused deaths and serious injuries, with damages being sought at £100 million. Despite these claims, the British government, which has protected AstraZeneca from legal action, has yet to intervene in the matter.

The focus of the controversy revolves around AstraZeneca’s admission of the vaccine’s potential to cause thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) in very rare cases. TTS, characterized by blood clots and low platelet counts, poses significant health risks to people receiving the vaccine.

Jamie Scott, the first plaintiff in the suit, alleges he suffered a permanent brain injury due to a blood clot after receiving the CobiShield vaccine in April 2021. AstraZeneca’s admission in court documents acknowledges the potential link between the vaccine and TTS, though largely rare cases.
