I had a friend. It would be more appropriate to call them elder brothers than friends. His name is Kamal Shukla. His office was next to Bandra Talkies on Linking Road. Thinkers and artists from different fields used to come to him. So it was always crowded there. It was great fun sitting there. Good people would meet. I met Khan Saheb there. Later visits continued. Many days passed in between. I started writing new films.
He started a film of my name ‘Sriman Aashiq’. One of the scenes required such a vocal song, with a classical tone. I suggested producer Shakeel Noorani and director Deepak Anand to sing this song by Ghulam Mustafa Khan Sahib. Nadeem Shravan also said the same. Nadiji knew him. He really liked the idea. He asked, ‘Will Khan Saheb sing this song?’ I said, ‘As great a teacher as he is, he is also a good man. I know them very well. I will talk to them. I hope they won’t refuse.’ After that I spoke to Khan Saheb and he agreed. That song is ready. Recording it was also a great experience.
anyway But, there was a question of who should do it in the picture. Who can bring a facial expression like what Khan Saheb has sung? I suggested the name Annu Kapoor. Everyone knew Annu Kapoor very well. Everyone immediately agreed.
An anecdote from this film is about Annu Kapoor (whom I call Annubhai). There was Qawwali in this film too. We were wondering who to buy it from. I said, ‘Annu Bhai.’ At first everyone looked at me in surprise. I said, ‘Bhai, I have worked with him in Laila-Majnu. He has many songs. I have seen people’s reaction to the range with which Annu Kapoor sings. No one can sing better than him.
Having spent a long time with Anubhai, I know his understanding of music and Qawwali.’ I knew and respected his talent very well. Till that time the film industry did not know much about Anubhai’s singing. Only those close to him knew this. Antakshar’s program had not even started on television. Annubhai was called. The track was recorded and Anubhai sang the Qawwali absolutely stunningly. He sang the song in both male and female vocals on the track. He also sang the lines of the song that was to be depicted on the girl. Annubhai sang so powerfully that everyone was impressed by his singing as well as his acting. Anubhai did everything needed to keep the mood and energy of the Qawwali full.
When the dubbing time came, Anubai called the male voice. Nadeem-Shravan called 3-4 people and tried to sing the female voice track. But, it didn’t match Anubhai’s track at all. There was no fun. Then everyone decided that there was a legendary singer who could only sing in this mood. That is Asha Bhosleji. Contacted Ashaji. They came prepared and came to the recording. Anubhai was called for a special recording and later the Qawwali was recorded.
It turned out so well that everyone had a lot of fun. Ashaji was also very happy to meet Anubhai. When Ashaji realized that Annubhai had good knowledge of music, folk music, Qawwali and Sufi singing, he invited him one day to Gautam Rajadhyaksha’s house and said, I want to make an album of folk songs with you. Then his ads were completed, the company also came on board.
We started practicing songs. Annubhai used to accompany Ashaji to Gautam Rajadhyaksha’s house and practice folk songs. They practiced a lot. He produced the songs, but due to some reasons the company went out of business and the album was not realized. But, the two great artists were mutual admirers, they try to do good work. From this event; For great actors like Annu Kapoor, Ghulam Mustafa Khan Saheb and Ashaji, Ek Sher Ahwatoy Josh Malihabadi… Har Hunar Ko Jo Ek Daulat Hai, Ilm Aur Jism ki Prahau Hai.
