In North Goa, people blocked the national highway and demanded the arrest of social activist Shreya Dargalkar. A case was registered against Sharia for hurting religious sentiments. Shariya was arrested by the Kunkol police in South Goa for a similar offence, but First Division Court Magistrate Kupam on Wednesday granted bail to the social worker.
North Goa Police Commissioner Akshat Kaushal said that late on Wednesday evening, a Magistrate in Bahul remanded the social worker in custody till June 4. However, much drama happened before her arrest. About 400 people gathered outside the police station in halls. The protesters demanded the arrest of the social activist Dargalkar and asked to bring him before them.
A senior official said Dargalkar released a video referring to followers of Sri Devi Lairai, in which they accused him of hurting religious sentiments. After the video was released, the Bichalim police registered an FIR against Dargalkar for hurting religious sentiments. According to eyewitnesses, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sagar Ekoskar tried hard to persuade people not to protest, but the protesters remained determined to arrest Dargalkar.
