GUWAHATI: The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear a petition on Monday, April 29, seeking the disqualification of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for six years for allegedly seeking to vote on behalf of Hindu and Sikh gods and places of worship.

The suit, filed by Anand S Jondhil, a lawyer, also seeks to prevent Modi from seeking votes on behalf of religious deities and places of worship. Judge Sachin Datta, who was supposed to hear the case today, was not available, causing a delay in the proceedings.

The petition follows a speech Modi gave on April 9 in Uttar Pradesh, where he solicited votes for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by referring to Hindu and Sikh deities and places of worship, and made comments suggesting that opposition parties favor Muslims. Jundhil claims that this speech, along with others by Modi, could incite religious hatred and thereby violate the code of conduct.

Jundhil claimed that he had earlier filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) seeking to disqualify Modi from contesting for office for six years under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, but no action was taken. He stressed that the timing of the speech, right before the Lok Sabha polls, made it essential for the ECI to act quickly to ensure fair elections.

In the speech in question, Modi allegedly boasted about building the Ram Temple, developing the Kartarpur Sahib corridor, and retrieving copies of the Guru Granth Sahib from Afghanistan. The petition claims that such statements violate the principles of secularism and fair election procedures.
