Congress leaders on Monday paid tributes to former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 60th death anniversary at his memorial in Shantivan in New Delhi.
Jawaharlal Nehru was a freedom fighter who played an important role in the freedom struggle. He became the first Prime Minister of independent India after 1947. He died of a heart attack on May 27, 1964. Nehru is considered the pioneer of India’s Non-Aligned Movement.
Congress National President Malikarjun Kharj, Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi and Rajya Sabha MP Ajay Maken paid tribute to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X: “I pay tribute to former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ji on his death anniversary.”
Posting on Twitter, Kharj said he was the creator of modern India, the one who took India forward in scientific, economic, industrial and various fields, a devoted defender of democracy, and the first Prime Minister of independent India. The history of India is incomplete without the incomparable contribution of our inspiration Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
The defense of the country, the progress of the country, the unity of the country is our national duty. We can follow different religions. We may live in different countries, speak different languages, but this should not create any wall between us. All people should have equal opportunities for advancement. We do not want some people in our country to be very rich and most of them to be very poor. Therefore, the Congress party is walking the same path of righteousness.
