GUWAHATI: AstraZeneca, the British pharma company that developed the Covishield vaccine, has initiated the global withdrawal of its vaccine, according to reports.

The company attributed the withdrawal to the overavailability of updated vaccines since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and, according to reports, "Since multiple, variant vaccines have been developed for COVID-19, there is a surplus of updated vaccines available."

This follows the huge controversy that flared up last week after AstraZeneca admitted in a UK court that the Covishield vaccine causes various rare side effects such as blood clots and low platelet counts.
