The Congress has appealed in the Supreme Court against the recovery of Rs 135 crore from party accounts.
The Income Tax Department has given a new notification to the Congress. In this regard, a tax demand of Rs 1745 crore has been made for 2014 to 2017. With this new notification, the tax demand on Congress has increased to Rs 3567 crore.
According to news agency PTI, tax demand notices worth Rs 663 crore for 2014-15, Rs 664 crore for 2015-16 and Rs 417 crore for 2016-17 have been sent to the Congress.
Sources connected to the Congress claim that the IT department has abolished the tax rebate given to political parties and imposed a tax on the party for the entire collection.
Reports also say that the investigating agency has also taxed the entries made by third parties in the diaries seized from the Congress leaders in the raid.
A notice of Rs 1800 crore was received two days ago
The Congress had received the first notice from the Income Tax Department two days ago, on March 29, Friday. In which about Rs 1823 crore was asked to be paid. This demand for payment notice is for 2017-18 to 2020-21. This includes interest plus a penalty.
Senior Congress leader Vivek Tankha wrote in his post on X – This is the height of madness. In the last 3 days, the Congress has been demanding tax which amounts to an astronomical sum of Rs 3567.33 crore. Thanks to his loyal officials in the Revenue Department for the BJP’s mission of a Congress-free India.
But remember, Indian voters have never supported dictatorial behavior. No democracy is possible without the opposition parties.
Tax department officials have already recovered Rs 135 crore from the party’s accounts for tax demands related to previous years. However, Congress has appealed against this in the Supreme Court, which can be heard on Monday.
Delhi HC had said – many transactions in the accounts were unaccounted for.
The Congress had filed a petition against the initiation of income tax reassessment proceedings for four years (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21). A Delhi bench of Justice HC Yashwant Verma and Justice Purushendra Kaurav, while rejecting the petition on March 28, had said that there were many unaccounted transactions in the Congress accounts. Income tax officers had solid evidence to act on tax assessment, and therefore steps have been taken.
The Congress had filed this petition in the Delhi High Court against the initiation of income tax reassessment proceedings for four years (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21). Even before this, Congress had challenged the assessment procedures from 2014-15 to 2016-17. That was also rejected by the court.
3 petitions have already been refused
Also on March 25, the court had rejected three petitions from Congress saying that Congress had chosen to appeal in court a few days before the end of the time for completing the assessment and at the last stage of the case.
On March 8, the court had upheld the order of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT). The tribunal had refused to stay the demand notice issued to the Congress for recovery of tax due of more than Rs 100 crore for 2018-19.
