A statement by Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly Vijay Vadtiwar has created a political controversy. The Congress leader said that in the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai, former ATS chief Hamant Karkara was not shot by terrorist Ajmal Kasab, but by a constable loyal to the RSS. Wadettiwar called the lawyer representing the case and the BJP candidate from Mumbai North-Central, Ujwal Nikam, a traitor.
Later Vedtiwar said – these are not my words
According to media reports, Vijay Vadtiwar alleged that Nikam hid evidence to protect the accused police officer. Nikam is not a lawyer but a traitor. He said, ‘My question is why is BJP protecting a traitor and why has it made such a person a candidate in the Lok Sabha elections’. The BJP Yuva Morha on Sunday staged a strong protest at Wadtiwar’s residence in Nagpur over the Congress leader’s controversial statement. As this matter gained momentum, Vadivar clarified his words. He said in Kolhapur that these are not my words, I only said what is written in SM Mushrif’s book. SM Mushrif was a former senior police officer of Maharashtra. In 2018, the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition raising doubts about Karkara’s death, which claimed that Hemant Karkara was not shot by terrorists Ajmal Kasab and Abu Ismail.
