GUWAHATI: Indore Congress candidate Akshay Kanti Bam chose to withdraw his nomination papers on Monday, leaving the party to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The city is scheduled to vote in the fourth phase on May 13.

The news of Bam’s transition was confirmed by Kailash Vijayvargiya, a minister in the Madhya Pradesh government, who extended a warm welcome to Bam on his entry into the BJP fold.

During the vetting of nominations, BJP legal cell officials raised concerns about the 17-year-old case against Bam, particularly for not mentioning the addition of Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in his nomination form.

However, the objection was rejected by the district commissioner, allowing Bam’s appointment to continue, as the clause was added on the same day as his appointment was submitted.

The case is scheduled for hearing on May 10, just three days before Indore district goes to the polls. In addition, while Bem’s nomination was accepted, the nominations of three other Congress candidates, who were filed as dummy candidates, were rejected by the Collector.

State Congress spokesperson Amin Al Khan Suri from Indore said while talking to the media, “The state president should be held accountable for this. They had no political advocacy in Indore. Why did the Congress party choose him as a candidate for one of the most important seats of Indore? There is no Take it lightly because it is a matter of shame for the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh.”

BJP legislator from Indore, Ramesh Mandola, also welcomed Bam to his party. Mandola said that Bam has shown his willingness to withdraw his appointment to support the ideology of the BJP. A comment from Bam is awaited and this copy will be updated whenever received.
