A commissioner contracted by the Calgary Police Service (CPS) has been charged with assault following an alleged incident with an arrestee at a police facility over the weekend.

According to a news release Wednesday, an arrestee was being processed at the Arrest Processing Section (APS), located at 12500 85 St. NW, just after midnight on May 4 when an argument broke out with a commissioner working at the facility.

The argument escalated and the police believe an assault took place.

The police said that neither the person arrested nor the commissioner was injured during the incident.

After reviewing CCTV footage and conducting an investigation, charges were brought against the commissioner on Wednesday.

Essayas Tekeste, 25, of Calgary was charged with one count of assault. He was dismissed as CPS commissioner, pending the outcome of the court process.

He is expected to appear in court on June 19.

“The Service contracts commissioners to carry out security duties in various CPS buildings, including the Assembly Parliamentary Service,” CPS said in the statement.

“Commissioners assist officers in processing arrests, however, they do not have the legal authority to use physical force in processing arrests.”

If physical intervention is necessary during processing, the police said that Assembly Parliamentary Service commissioners are trained to withdraw and let an officer deal with the situation.
