City council repeals Calgary’s one-time bylaw after public pushback – Calgary Achi-News

Calgary city council has officially binned a bylaw requiring businesses to charge for a paper bag and hand out single-use items only upon customer request.

Only three councilors voted against repealing the city’s one-time bylaw: Courtney Walcott, Kourtney Penner and Gian-Carlo Carra.

The bylaw, approved by the council in 2022, set a minimum fee of 15 cents for paper bags and $1 for reusable bags, and required businesses to provide disposable utensils, cutlery , napkins and condiments on customer request only.

The new rules faced significant public pushback when they were implemented earlier this year, which prompted the city council to begin the process to repeal the process two weeks later.
