When Naxalites danced on the corpse in Jiram
Year 2013… Assembly elections were to be held in Chhattisgarh at the end of the year. In the last two elections the Bharatiya Janata Party won and Raman Singh was the Chief Minister. The Congress, which was away from power for 10 years, tried its best to win this time. In this sequence, the Congress was preparing to take out the Parivartan Yatra in the entire state. On May 25, the Congress organized a parivartan rally in Sukma.

After the rally was over, the convoy of Congress leaders went from Sukma to Jagdalpur. There were about 25 vehicles in the convoy, in which 200 leaders were traveling. In the foreground were Congress state president Nandakumar Patel, his son Dinesh Patel and Kwasi Lehma with their bodyguards.
Behind them were the vehicles of Mahendra Karma and Malkit Singh Gaido. The then Congress in-charge Buster Uday Mudaliar marched behind this vehicle along with several other leaders. If seen, all the senior leaders of Chhattisgarh Congress were included in this convoy.
The convoy passed through the Jiram Valley around 4:00 p.m. Here the Naxalites blocked the road by cutting down trees. The vehicles stopped and before anyone could realize anything, more than 200 Naxalites hiding behind the trees started firing indiscriminately.
Naxalites attacked all the vehicles. Nandkumar Patel and his son Dinesh died on the spot. The shooting lasted about an hour and a half.
Around 5:30 in the evening the Naxals came down from the mountains and started checking every vehicle. Those killed in the shooting were shot and stabbed again, so that no one was left alive. Those who were alive were held hostage.
Meanwhile, Mahendra Karma got down from a car and said, ‘Take me as a hostage, leave the rest’. The Naxalites took Mahendra Karma to a short distance and brutally murdered him. More than 30 people died in the attack. In this, except Ajit Jogi, most of the then great leaders of the Chhattisgarh Congress and security forces personnel were martyred.
The main target of this attack was Bastar Tiger Mahendra Karma. The Naxalites considered him their greatest enemy, because he led the ‘Salva Judum’. Naxalites fired about 100 bullets into his body and stabbed him more than 50 times with knives. After the murder, Naxalites even danced on his dead body.
