Congress state president Deepak Baij said we are continuously discussing with our leaders regarding the local elections. A large meeting at the state level is going to take place in the near future. Whatever BJP does, it won’t have any significant impact.

Since the establishment of the state, only direct elections have been held for the mayor and the president of the municipality, but after the establishment of the Congress government in Chhattisgarh in 2019, the election process was changed. The then Bhopsh government conducted the last elections of the municipal body through an indirect system. By virtue of the number of council members, mayors were elected from the Congress in all municipal corporations.

Now we have another election ahead of us. In such a situation there is also a discussion that this time the state government can once again conduct a direct election for the mayor with changes in the rules.

The first elections were held under the Raman government.

Before the creation of Chhattisgarh state in 1999, the Digvijay Singh Congress government in undivided Madhya Pradesh usurped the right to elect the mayor from the councilors and transferred it to the public. After that, direct elections were held in Chhattisgarh even before 2019.

The system changed in 2019

After the formation of the Congress government in the state, ahead of the municipal body elections in 2019, the previous Bhopal government made substantial changes in the Nagar Panchayat, Municipal and Municipal Corporation election rules. In this way, the right to elect the president and mayor from the public was taken away and given to the elected council members.

Before that, there was a direct election of a president and mayor in the civil bodies and the public used to vote for these leading positions. Then the opposition party BJP protested against it and expressed the fear of horse trading.
