The Maharashtra Police on Tuesday told the Bombay High Court that it has registered a case against BJP members Nitish Rane and Geeta Jain. Police said they found during investigation that both of them had made objectionable speeches during the communal violence in Thane district in January.

A division bench of Chief Justices Mohit Dera and Manjusha Deshpande last week asked the respective police chiefs to personally verify whether the two leaders had made objectionable and inflammatory speeches.

Public prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar today told the court that a preliminary investigation revealed that the speeches made by Ran and Jain during the communal violence in Meera Bhainder (in Thane district) in January this year were derogatory. Vangaonkar said Ran is accused of making hate speeches at rallies in Mumbai’s Malwani, Mankhord and Ghatkopar areas. He told that Jain is accused of hate speech in a rally in Meera Bhainder.

He said the police have registered an FIR against him under sections 153A (promoting enmity between persons on grounds of religion), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). .

He further said that 13 separate FIRs have been registered against other persons in connection with the communal violence that broke out in Mira Bhainder between January 22 and 26. Vangaonkar said the investigation into all the cases is ongoing.

The bench set June 19 for the next hearing in the case. The court was hearing petitions filed by Ran, Jain and Telangana MLA T Raja Singh against alleged inflammatory speeches given by them at Mira Road in Thane district in January this year. In these petitions it is claimed that these speeches were given after communal violence in the area. The petitions sought to register an FIR against the MLA members.
