Candidates for 2024 Chess: Goksh becomes the youngest candidate ever for the World Championship Achi-News

GUWAHATI: In a historic feat, India’s 17-year-old prodigy Dommaraju Gukesh has become the youngest player to win the Candidates Tournament in chess, securing his place in the annals of chess history and earning the right to challenge reigning World Chess Champion Ding Liren.

Gokash’s victory at the age of only 17 surpasses the record previously held by chess legend Garry Kasparov for over 40 years. With 9/14 points, Gokesh’s performance in the tournament was nothing short of amazing, making him the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to win the title at this prestigious event.

In the crucial final round, Gukesh showed composure and skill by holding American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura to a draw. With Gokash securing 9 points, all eyes were on the match between Fabiano Caruana and Ian Napomaniaci.

Caruana initially held the lead, but a critical error due to time pressure leveled the field, leading to a draw. This result confirmed Gokesh’s victory, with Caruana, Napomaniactci and Nakamura settling for second place with 8.5 points each.

Indian Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Santosh Gujrathi finished fifth and sixth respectively with seven and six points. When Gokash left the tournament venue, he was greeted by a crowd of fans eager to take selfies and congratulate him on his extraordinary achievement.

Following his extraordinary win, congratulatory messages poured in for the young chess star. Anand, India’s first world chess champion, expressed his admiration on social media, saying: "I am personally very proud of how you played and handled difficult situations."
