A downtown Calgary restaurant has reopened after Alberta Health Services ordered it closed due to a sewage backup on Wednesday.

According to a notice on the AHS website, Blowers and Grafton in the Mission neighborhood were closed due to water and debris from the back of sewers in the basement kitchen.

The notice also stated that the restaurant’s dishwasher was not adequately sanitizing the dishes and that there were not enough equipment available for washing dishes by hand.

Josh Robinson, chief brand officer and one of the owners of Blowers and Grafton, told Global News that a plumbing issue on the street outside the restaurant caused sewage backups for several nearby businesses.

He added that he agreed with the closure.

“Some establishments, including ourselves, have actually had some sewage backup coming into their establishments. We are not the only food organization that has happened in the last week,” he told Global News on Sunday.

Robinson said the staff noticed the dishwasher was not working on the morning of the inspection and they were getting a technician in to fix it.

He said that the inspection had come at a bad time but that he took full responsibility for the offences. The restaurant was able to open on Thursday morning after AHS confirmed that the sewage issue had been rectified.

“We rectified the issues immediately … we made sure the team cleaned that back room right away, and luckily we were able to open the next morning. Hopefully we’ll deal with the sewer issue, so we don’t have to run into this kind of thing,” said Robinson.

“We understand that the public’s trust is ignored in these types of situations, and it looks very scary. Obviously, it’s scary for us too … but we’re hoping we can rebuild that trust and get everyone on board. We take great pride in food safety and quality.”
