Large flames burned through a home in the Marlborough community of Calgary on Saturday night, causing damage to nearby power lines.

Eight residents, along with several pets, were safely evacuated from the single-family home, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) said.

Crews were called to the 4700 block of Memorial Drive around 11:20 pm, where firefighters used large hose streams from outside to help firefighters get into the house and put out the flames.

CFD said the “large fire” was being fed by a heat-damaged natural gas meter, which was being brought under control by firefighters outside.

Firefighters said the flames also damaged overhead power lines. ATCO and Enmax gas were on scene to secure the utility.

“Damage from the fire meant that the gas line to the home needed to be dug up to stop the gas flow,” CFD said.
