After a few days of wet and cold weather, Calgary and southern Alberta will see a well-timed (albeit brief) recovery.

Sunshine will return to the region for Friday, Saturday and most of Sunday. Daytime highs are expected to reach the mid-double digits and winds should be generally light.

Late on Sunday another round of precipitation is expected to begin as a deep trough moves south of the international border.

Light showers are possible in southern Alberta in the evening, with scattered rain likely on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The sunshine over the next few days will help with melting snow that still remains on natural surfaces within Calgary (eg lawns), but some areas outside of the city due to higher snow accumulations this week.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) many communities – especially along the slopes, recorded significant snow totals from Monday morning to Thursday. Kananaskis measured 53 centimeters of snow, Canmore 40 centimeters and in Calgary the water equivalent measurements* were between 21.5 and 23.4 millimeters at the official ECCC weather stations. (*a more accurate measurement of snow).

There’s a slight chance of a shower or even a thunderstorm on Friday, but it’s more likely that Calgary will have an inauspicious start to the weekend.

Daytime highs will remain slightly below the seasonal 15 C, but for most nights overnight temperatures will be slightly warmer than average by 1 C.
