BSF had great success on the day of the sixth phase of polling in West Bengal. A smuggler was arrested with 89 cookies containing 16 kg of gold worth Rs 12 million at the India-Bangladesh border.
BSF South Bengal Frontier Public Relations Officer DIG AK Arya said during the sixth phase of polling in North 24 Parganas, BSF conducted a special operation and seized a huge consignment of gold in the border village of Haldarpada on the Indo-Bangladesh border of North 24 Parganas district. Border post Gunarmath, the men of the 5th battalion found 89 gold cookies of different sizes from the house of Alok (name changed) in Haldarpada village. The smuggler, after smuggling the gold shipment from Bangladesh to India, hid it in his home before another delivery. The soldiers arrested him along with the shipment of gold he hid in a cloth belt. Upon opening the cloth belt, 89 gold cookies of various sizes were found. After that, the said person was brought to the Kalyani border post along with the gold shipment for further action. The total weight of the seized gold is 16.067 kg and the estimated market value is 12 million rupees.
The arrested smuggler has been identified as Alok Paul (name changed) from North 24 Parganas district. According to Arya, during the investigation Alok revealed that in the last week of March 2024 he came into contact with a gold smuggler from Bangladesh. He promised to pay him 400 rupees every day to keep his gold shipment hidden at home, to which he agreed and got involved in this job. After that, the unknown smuggler continued to bring shipments of gold to his home. On May 25, around 12:40 pm, an unknown smuggler gave him 89 biscuits and gold bricks of different sizes to hide in the house. BSF came to know about this and conducted a special operation and seized him along with the gold consignment during the search.
